Corktown Girls Beat Morriston

August 8th 1934.

The rural girls’ softball loop is in the middle of a heavy week of games and last evening the Morriston lasses paid a visit to the Corktown girls and took the short end of a 26 to 19 score.  This evening, the Morriston team is to play the Vics, and tomorrow evening the Vics and Corktown are to clash.  With the tournament at the picnic on Monday, this gives the girls in the circuit a rather strenuous series of games for the week.

The session last evening was staged in Forbes Park and the Corktown girls showed their ability at the bat to hammer out a win from the Morriston team.  Mary Neath, Vera Franks, Phyllis Bruce, and Fern McCreary each made a hit for the circuit and to round things out Phyllis Bruce and Vera Franks each counted a three-base drive on their records.

The Morriston girls started out by grabbing a goodly lead in the early innings but the fourth saw the fixture sewed up at 17 all and in the last frame the homesters took the lead with nine runs.  The score by innings:

Morriston… 0-11-5-1-2-0---19

Corktown… 0- 3-7-7-9-x----26

Morriston – McMillan, 1st base, Jean McPherson, catcher, M. Westlake, 3rd base, Philpot, 2nd base, Lillian Culp, pitcher, Martin, short stop, Winer, left field, Hall, centre field, L. Westlake, right field.

Corktown – Isabel Henderson, 1st base, Ball, 2nd base, Henry, short stop, Fern McCreary, catcher, Mary Neath, 3rd base, Marie McCreary, pitcher, Isabel Rife, pitcher, Phyllis Bruce, centre field, Vera Franks, left field, Jean Whitmore, right field, Lola Stark, right field.

Umpires—Ziegler and E. Gregor of Morriston.

Morriston Wins from Vics 21-10

August 9th 1934.

Last evening the Morriston girls met the Hespeler Vics in the rural girls softball fixture, postponed on account of rain from last Thursday, and the visitors took a 21-10 win from the local lassies.

With one more game on the card, when Corktown and the Vics are to meet this evening, the standing is:

Wins

Losses

Ties

Corktown

2

0

1

Morriston

2

2

0

Vics

0

2

Morriston has completed the card and no matter what the result of tonight’s game, the Morriston and Vics squads will play a sudden death game for the right to meet Corktown in the league finals.

Last evening, the Morriston lassies took the lead in the opening canto and the Vics failed to seriously threaten the advantage throughout the game.  The score:

Morriston… 2-0-5-3-0-4-7…21

Vics………… 1-0-1-1-3-0-4…10

Batteries---Evelyn Culp and Jean McPherson, for Morriston, Beatrice McDonald, Jean Levitt and Madge Perry, for Hespeler Vics.

Umpires--- Panabaker (Hespeler) and Gregor (Morriston).

Three-Way Tie in Softball Loop is Possibility Now

August 10th 1934.

Things in the rural girls’ softball loop are by way of being in a mix-up.  Last evening, the Vics beat Corktown 12 to 7 in the last of the scheduled games, played in the school field, and now there is a possibility that the round may be all tied up.  At present, the standing is:

Wins

Losses

Ties

Corktown

2

1

1

Morriston

2

2

0

Vics

1

2

1

This means, that according to the usual practice, the Vics and Corktown will have to play off the tie game and a win for the Vics will mean that the round is all tied up.  It was thought that the point system applied to the series but from information received there was no such ruling in the minutes of the league, so it looks as if the tie game will have to be replayed, as it certainly has a bearing on the standings.

In last evening’s game, Corktown took a nearly lead but the fourth frame saw the Vics turn the tables and hold the advantage until the final frame.  The score by innings was:

Corktown… 0-0-1-0-2-0-4-0-0---7

Vics………… 0-0-0-5-0-1-4-2-x---12

The teams:

Corktown—Henderson, 1st base, From, 1st base, Ball, 2nd base, Henry, short stop, McCreary, catcher, Neath, 3rd base, O’Krafka, pitcher, Bruce, right field, Franks, centre field, Stark, left field, Rife, left field.

VicsDeemert, 2nd base, Perry, catcher, Walker, left field, Goebel, short stop, Raymond, centre field, Pullam, 3rd base, Gibson, right field, Warnholz, first base, Levitt, pitcher.

Morriston Girls Beat Vics 18-14

August 14th 1934.

Final Five-Game Series to Start in Morriston This Evening

Last evening, Forbes Park saw the Morriston lasses clash with the Hespeler Vics in the semi-finals of the rural girls’ softball league, a sudden death game for the right to meet the Corktown girls, the leaders of the loop, in the final series.  The Morriston lasses took an 18-14 win from the local club, and as a result, the final five-game series is to be between the Morriston and Corktown teams and is to start in Morriston at six o’ clock this evening.  The card calls for games each evening at six until the series is completed or one team has won three games.  Tonight the teams will meet in Morriston.  Should the series go more than three games the fourth will be in Forbes Park on Friday and the fifth in Morriston, on Saturday.

The fixture last evening saw the Morriston team take a lead in the opening frames that was held until the final batter was out.  While the Vics were the heavy hitters, Warholz and Gibson hitting for the circuit, the visitors held the edge in getting the runners over the plate.  The score by innings:

Morriston… 5-6-3-0-0-4-0-0-0----18

Vics………… 1-2-7-1-2-0-0-1-0-----14

The teams:

Morriston---McMillan, 1st base, McPherson, catcher, Westlake, short stop, Philpott, 3rd base, Paterson, 2nd base, Martin, right field, McLean, centre field, Sutton, left field, Westlake, left field, Culp, pitcher.

Vics---Deemart, 2nd base, Beckman, catcher, Walker, left field, Warnholz, 1st base, Raymond, centre field, Pullam, 3rd base, Gibson, right field, McDonald, right field, Goebel, short stop, Levitt, pitcher.

Morriston Girls Win First Game

August 15th 1934.

Last evening, the Morriston girls took the first game of the final series in the rural girls’ softball from the Corktown lasses by a count of 22 to 13.  The game was staged in Morriston and the second session on the slate is to be played here tonight at six o’ clock in Forbes Park.  The decision rests on the outcome of a three-out-of-five series and games will be played alternately in Morriston and Hespeler until a winner is declared.

Last evening there was no particular outstanding bit of play.  The Corktown team held the lead until the first six stanzas were by and then Morriston staged a rally that put them out in front, a position that they held when the game came to an end.  The Morriston girls were at the top of their form and the Corktown team seemed to become a little sluggish as the game progressed.  The score by innings:

Corktown… 5-0-1-0-5-2-0-0-0---13

Morriston--- 1-0-3-1-3-4-6-4-x---22

Batteries--- McCreary and McCreary, Culp and McPherson.

Umpires--- Yontz of Hespeler and Gregor of Morriston.

Morriston Wins Softball Series

August 30th 1934.

Defeat Corktown Girls by 18 to 14 Count and Take Group Title

The Morriston misses handed the Corktown girls an 18 to 14 defeat in Forbes park last evening to win the final series of the rural girls’ softball group.  Morriston took the first two games in the three-out-of-five final series and then Corktown took a win on Monday night.  The fourth game was played here last night when, in a see-saw affair, the visitors won to take their third victory and the group title.

The first few frames looked as if it would be a closely fought game with a low count.  Hespeler stepped into the lead at first, to have the visitors reverse the standing in the fourth.  The local lassies managed to go out in front again in the eighth but the misses from Morriston staged a ninth inning rally to score ten runs and put the fixture on ice.

Evelyn Culp did the pitching for Morriston, and this girl, who has pitched practically all of the team’s games, threw them up steadily and, excepting the eighth inning, held control of the situation.  She struck out three and gave two passes.

Marie McCreary started for Corktown and went 8 innings with three strikeouts and two walks chalked up.  In the ninth frame, Isabel Rife was put on the mound to try to stop Morriston’s hitting program but the visitors kept right on, assisted by a couple of errors, to hammer the ball around.

The score:

Morriston… 0-0-0-4-2-0-0-2-10…18

Corktown… 1-1-1-0-2-0-0-6-03….14

Batteries— Morriston—E. Culp and McPherson (catcher),

Corktown-- M. McCreary, I. Rife and F. McCreary (catcher).

Umpires--- Bruce, of Hespeler, at the plate and Gregor, of Morriston, on the bases.
